1 Susanne Johnson Head-of-School One night each spring the Barnesville School community gathers to reconnect, kick up our heels and raise funds for the exceptional experiences afforded each of our children through their Barnesville education. We look forward to carrying on the tradition at this year's SHINDIG & Auction – Vittles and Vino. With over 80% of our students traveling from suburban neighborhoods to attend the ONLY independent school on the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve, this year's Shindig will shine a spotlight on the school's treasured rural setting. Maryland's 93,000-acre Agricultural Reserve is a nationally recognized model of farmland and open space preservation, and a thriving, bountiful place. Tonight we celebrate the many ways Barnesville's unique location nurtures our children through daily access to fresh air, open spaces, abundant nature, and bearing witness to the cycles of working the land. I wish to direct your attention to this year's special appeal. Each year we look to support a particular initiative and time and time again, we are enormously moved by our community's generosity. During this year's live auction, we will ask you to raise your paddle high to support our being a school of Arts & Sciences in the heart of the Agricultural Reserve. We want to ensure that we sustain our efforts to provide our children with meaningful Arts & Sciences education supported by direct outdoor experiential learning. Barnesville School relies entirely on tuition and philanthropic donations to fund our programs. Our primary fundraising event is this annual Shindig &Auction. Proceeds support Barnesville's Operating Budget. The Shindig proceeds, along with direct donations to the Barnesville School Fund, help to bridge the $4,500 gap between tuition and operating costs. Keeping tuition below cost allows the school to offer an exceptional educational opportunity to more families in this growing and diverse region. Over the years Shindig & Auction events have raised significant funds to support the joyful and nurturing learning environment our faculty provides students each and every day. We are grateful to many members of our Barnesville community for dedicating countless hours toward making this event a memorable success. A special thank you to our Shindig Chair, Lydia Fraser (parent of Toby Arcuri 7 th ) and Robin Snider, Marketing Associate & Director of Special Events, who worked together tirelessly to transform their vision into reality of a community-centric evening celebrating one of Barnesville's most outstanding treasures. So…do kick up your heels and have a fabulous time at our Shindig! I sincerely thank you in advance for your continued support of Barnesville by bidding high and often. 2 0 1 8 S h i n d i g & A u c t i o n
