In eighth grade art, you will be granted
more autonomy as you work toward
developing your own individual style. Some
projects are thematic, while others will be
inspired by your interests. We cover a wide
range of media including photography,
drawing, painting, digital art, printmaking,
and ceramics.
Eighth graders participate in a juried art show
at the Black Rock Arts Center. roughout the
course of the year, students develop a
portfolio of work ranging from painting to
drawing, sculpture, and conceptual art. A jury
selects work from each student's portfolio to
be included in the exhibition. e same jury
awards prizes in a variety of categories. An
important part of this year long process is
teaching students how to photograph and
write about their work, as well as to curate and
install their artwork.
Seventh grade art is linked to both social
studies and science. Greek and Roman art,
architecture, and mythology are tackled in a
complex, multi-part unit on ceramics, in which
we examine the vessel as form and subject
matter. Students look at examples from the
Nazca and Greek civilizations all the way
through contemporary vessels that utilize 3-D
printing technology. Later, we integrate your
study of biology into the art making process.
We look at a variety of artists whose work is
inspired by the body, and for the first time,
students are introduced to more contemporary
art practices including performance and video.
