The Cohen Scholarship Committee awards the scholarship based on standardized test- ing, school transcripts, and performance in the classroom. Candidates must also ex- emplify the School's mission of joy, support, and excellence, as demonstrated through teacher recommendations and student essays. The purpose of the Cohen Scholarship program is to honor Frieda Cohen (or "Grandma Frieda" as she was known to Barnes- ville School students) and her parents, Rose and David Cohen. This scholarship demon- strates her many years of generosity to Barnesville and her commitment to helping students and families realize the benefits of a Barnesville experience. The 2017 Cohen Scholarship was awarded at Barnesville's end of the year Awards As- sembly (photos are on Facebook). Students were also recognized for exemplary work in the following categories: Academic Merit, Math, Science, Young Performers, Art , Spanish Achievement, Perfect Attendance Admissions Ambassadors Seventh and eighth grade students who qualified to sit for the National Spanish Exam were awarded na- tional distinctions. Barnesville students earned two gold, five silver, and three bronze medals, along with five additional honors. Each of the eighth graders who took the exam last year all saw an increase in their raw scores. Placing within a medal category is a wonderful achievement, but not the sole purpose of taking the exam. For the seventh graders especially, the exam is an opportunity to gain perspective on how far they've come in their learning and how far they should aim to reach next year. Rising Sixth Grader Earns Scholarship for Academic Achievement Daniil E. was awarded the Cohen Scholarship for Academic Achievement. Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences offers rising and new 6th grade students the opportunity to apply for this $1,000 merit-based scholarship that renews for 7th and 8th grade years as long as the student maintains their strong performance and good standing.
