2016 Class
Gift Connected
to School-wide
Bird Study
In the fall of 2015, Barnesville embarked on a school-
wide partnership with Black Hill Regional Park to en-
hance outdoor and environmental education across the
School's curriculum. Each month, one grade takes a field
trip to Black Hill, which overlooks Little Seneca Lake, and
naturalists from the Park visit Barnesville to share their
expertise with students. Park naturalists are also advising
the school on its multi-year bird study for a field guide
that documents campus wildlife. The "Flying WILD" bird
study inspired the graduating Class of 2016's gift to the
School.
Each spring, eighth graders research environmental issues and write a related infor-
mational essay. This year, the focus of those papers was endangered birds. Facts from
that research were reflected on birdhouses the students built as their class gift to the
School. Each student built his or her own bird house based on the endangered bird he
or she wrote about. The Class of 2016 birdhouses were mounted around campus along
with Bluebird nesting boxes built by the sixth grade in conjunction with Black Hill.
