SPANISH language and culture are introduced to children beginning in Preschool. Introducing foreign lan guage studies at an early age takes advantage of the devel- oping brain's receptivity to acquiring new sounds and provides a jump-start to ongoing language capabilities. Barnesville's preschool program introduces students to the language through the use of games, songs, and movement. From first through fourth grade, twice-weekly Spanish instruction is based on "Descubre el EspaƱol," a program that interweaves language skills with geography and cultural lessons. Students in fifth through eighth grade learn Spanish through immersion experi- ences to strengthen speak ing proficiency and cultural appreciation. By the time students depart eighth grade, they are proficient in Spanish in the areas of commu- nication, culture, connections, comparisons, and communities. Many gradu ates place into Spanish II or III in ninth grade. Our Peruvian exchange program further enriches our students and community.
