Benefits of the Preschool-8th Grade Model Many independent private schools follow the preschool-8th grade model, and those that do go through twelfth grade often have a separate and distinct campus for high school. While most public schools separate elementary and middle school students, some are moving to a K-8th grade structure because research shows students benefit, especially in 6th and 7th grades. This age is a notoriously difficult time for adolescents. The preschool through 8th grade model fosters an environment where young adolescents can enjoy childhood a bit longer. In our kind of close-knit community, we can be completely comfortable encouraging students to take risks and experiment in a safe, nurturing environment. And, our Middle School students are leaders and role models for our younger students. They are truly looked up to by the younger students and take that responsibility seriously. As hard as it is to part with students after 8th grade, we recognize that it is a developmentally appropriate milestone, and our students are ready to move on for the next step in their education. -- Heads Blog, Susanne Johnson, Head of School Barnesville has an excellent record for high school placement. We work with each family throughout the application process, from researching high schools to final acceptances. A comprehensive packet of information outlines everything, from teacher recommendations to testing requirements and deadlines. Each eighth grade family also meets one-on-one with the Head of School and Assistant Head for guidance on which schools, public and private, could be the right fit for the student. Students work on application essays and practice interviews as part of their eighth grade Language Arts class. Feedback is provided to each student, including what they did well and tips on how they can improve. High School Placement
